About

My love of illustration and painting goes back to childhood. I was always referred to as "That kid that can draw good." My early artwork was traditionally painted with acrylics and watercolors. As times and technology have changed I’ve transitioned to using modern tools such as a Wacom tablet with Adobe Photoshop™ and Illustrator™, though I still ink on paper with brushes and pens. Whatever your illustration needs, I will work with you to create eye-catching images that will enhance your project.

Cartoon Illustration

This is my primary illustration style that begins with sketches on the computer that I then hand-ink the line work on paper with brushes and pens. I scan the line work and add color in Photoshop. The colors are accentuated with airbrushed shadows, highlights, and blends.

Vector Illustration

This style begins with sketches in Photoshop, then I use Adobe Illustrator to create the final artwork with objects that are built with flat shapes. The resulting images are easily scalable, without the loss of definition or detail, so they can be used for materials of any size or media. I’ve often used this style for images for use in animation and interactive apps.

Painted Illustration

My painted illustrations are usually created entirely in Photoshop using digital painting techniques. I also still work traditionally in acrylics. Although many feature strong line work, they are generally characterized by an illusion of three-dimensional shapes, defined by transitions of light and dark tones.

PERSONAL

I live southwest of Seattle on Vashon Island and have lived in the Pacific Northwest since I was 2 years old. I have been producing illustrations and commercial artwork since 1990, after earning a degree in graphic design from Washington State University. Interestingly, I was named after "Kevin the Bold," a swashbuckling Irish Shepherd from a comic strip that ran in the 1950s and 1960s. Early on I loved comic strips and comic books and dreamed of being a famous cartoonist. I drew many comics that mimicked my favorites like Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, Asterix, and even Blondie. In high school I self-published a couple of comic books featuring my character Arnie Astronaut (copies are still available - I printed way too many!)

During my career I have been the creative director of a large Internet company, worked as an editorial cartoonist and graphic designer at newspapers, designed ads for a yellow pages publisher, and even spent almost 5 years in an engineering department as a 3D modeller and drafter. I have a long list of freelance clients in the United States and abroad, including Gibbs Smith, Nintendo, Wizards of the Coast, Starlog and Comics Scene magazines, Reader's Digest, King Features Syndicate, and GrapeCity in Japan. Specializing in humorous cartoon illustration that is colorful, dynamic, and sometimes zany, I have worked on a wide variety of projects including digital art, animation, games, book design, t-shirts, publishing, and website development.

My wife, Tami, and I have four grown children and one grandchild. I have a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo and I hold a commercial pilot's license. I enjoy singing & playing instruments including guitar (acoustic, electric, and bass), a little keyboard, and completely amateurish drums. Outdoors I like to sail, kayak, bike ride, hike, and even do yard work. I am a Do-It-Yourselfer when it comes to home and auto repair. I am also an avid computer gamer with a love for RPG games. Tami and I enjoy traveling to tropical locales and have been to Hawaii many times, the Caribbean, Belize and the Cook Islands.
